Get To Know Washington, D.C.

Welcome to the nation’s capital! Washington, District of Columbia, is the seat of the U.S. government and a central attraction for history, culture, entertainment, and worldwide cuisine.

Sitting on the east bank of the Potomac River, Washington, D.C., is divided into four geographic quadrants — Northwest, Northeast, Southeast, and Southwest — designated by their direction from the Capitol Rotunda. The 670,000 residents of D.C. — or The District, as it is known locally — do not reside in a U.S. state, as the capital city is a federally administered municipality.

One of the best reasons to visit is the abundant world-class activities that are free. Start your exploration on the National Mall — known as the nation’s front yard — where you can follow the Peace Trail along the northwest corner to experience national monuments like the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, and many others. The world’s largest museum and research complex, the Smithsonian Institution includes 17 free D.C. museums — 11 of them are conveniently located on the National Mall, including the National Museum of American History, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the National Museum of Natural History, and the newest, the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Also on the Mall, you’ll find important private museums, like the National Gallery of Art and United States National Holocaust Memorial Museum.

For plant- and garden-lovers, head over to the U.S. Botanic Garden on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol, and the 450-acre U.S. National Arboretum, a major center of botanical research operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Family favorites include the National Air and Space Museum and the National Zoo — both operated by the Smithsonian, so they’re free! — and tours of the Washington Nationals ballpark.

Enjoy the fall weather with a stroll, hike, ranger-led program, or picnic at Rock Creek Park. Tour the oasis of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. Get active with a walk, run, or bike ride along Georgetown Waterfront Park, the newest park in D.C., stretching along and over the Potomac River, with spectacular vistas, through The District, Maryland, and Virginia. Take a casual stroll to explore various neighborhoods of D.C., each with its own vibe.

You can’t leave Washington, D.C., without touring the nerve centers of our three branches of government: The White House (you must submit a request 21–90 days in advance), the U.S. Capitol, and the Supreme Court of the United States.

Take in some culture at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts for multiple options, Woolly Mammoth Theatre for edgy performances, The National Theater for a Broadway-style musical or play, or the Shakespeare Theater Company to catch a classic. Check out the full scope of theater venues to suit your taste. Are you a bibliophile? Don’t miss Politics and Prose, the renowned independent bookstore and cultural hub.
